Adventures of Bloom & Wallace

a work in progress

Another Op’nin, Another Show: 2010/2011 At The Florida Rep

Orchids In Bloom At HQ

It’s autumn again in Fort Myers, a really wonderful time of the year.  Daytime temperatures are back in the 80’s with the nights slipping into the low 60’s.  The humidity has moderated, orchids are blooming like mad, and it’s time to replace the summer potted flowers with impatiens, which much prefer the cooler temperatures.  The torrential tropical rains of summer have disappeared, and we’re well into our dry season of bright sunlight, crisp blue sky, and fluffy white clouds.  Lots of migrating birds visit our lake, and if not for the resident eagles discouraging long stays, some of them would likely winter here.  Yes, for anyone who takes the time to notice, autumn has come to Bloom & Wallace headquarters.

But our seasonal changes are subtle in south Florida if you only pay attention to the clues of nature.  For those of us who live here yeararound as well as for our “snowbirds,” there are much more obvious signs that autumn has arrived.  Increasing traffic as the earliest “snowbirds” arrive, the best restaurants starting to take reservations again, non-profits putting the finishing touches on their fundraising plans (during season, you could go to dozens of fundraisers each week, dressed in anything from ballgowns to belly dancing costumes, and not even make a dent!),  every conceivable type of studio and performance art on offer, weekend art festivals in full swing, and a whole world of arts/cultural/enrichment courses starting up.

There’s an incredible amount of cultural life here, far more than we ever expected when we left the city lights of DC for the sandy beaches of Fort Myers in 1999.  Perhaps because so many moneyed retirees have brought not only their wealth but their expectations for cultural and charitable institutions, we have the infrastructure of a much larger community.  Quality, accessibility, and affordability are the hallmarks of the cultural institutions in our area, and none more so than The Florida Repertory Theater, the only professional regional theater between Sarasota and Miami.  If I sound like a proud parent, it’s because Ron and I have been donors and then show sponsors at The Rep since we discovered this wonderful theater company, and I’m a member of the Board.  Don’t take my word for it; we’ve had top reviews, here and here, by the Wall Street Journal.  If you’ve enjoyed theater in the intimate settings of London stages, then you’ll love our historic Arcade Theater in the heart of olde Fort Myers, just steps from the Caloosahatchee River.  One of our dreams is to take our boat, m/v SmartyPants, up the River to downtown (I know that sounds funny, but she’s slipped near the Gulf), take a slip at the municipal marina, and just walk off our boat to the theater.

So, with autumn in the air, we’ll be launching our 13th season next Friday night 10/29/10 with Noises Off, one of my favorite British farces.  And that’s just for starters.  Gaslight, The 39 Steps, August: Osage County, and so much more.  If you’re coming our way — and you really should — we’d like to introduce you to our theater with Bloom & Wallace courtesy vouchers, first come, first served.  Each voucher entitles the bearer to two free seats for the performance of your choice, obviously subject to availability.  So get those winter vacation plans in place ASAP, and let me know you’re coming.  We’d love to meet you at the theater.

#HRTechConf 2011 Prep: 65th Birthday Professional Resolutions

Birthday Girl Circa 2000

Birthday Girl Circa 2000

Missing #HRTechConf this year meant, even more than the loss of professional learning/networking/vendor briefing/audience interaction/etc., not seeing good friends.  Since many of my closest friends began as professional colleagues — and that process continues — I really missed our annual “reunion.”  But I truly was where I needed to be, supporting my closest of friends when she lost her son tragically and unexpectedly.

All the more reason I’m planning now for #HRTechConf 2011 in Las Vegas, and  I hope you’ll be there too.  I had planned some surprises for this year’s show, to include announcing my latest professional resolutions.  There’s nothing more motivating when you really want to keep resolutions than announcing them to a thousand or so colleagues, many of whom will tweet/blog/chat/generally call out your accomplishments or lack thereof.   Since I plan to report at #HRTechConf 2011 about how well (or not) I’ve done with my 65th Bday professional resolutions,  I thought I’d build momentum for their accomplishment by committing to them publicly — right here and now:

1.  Meet as many as possible of the Enterprise Irregulars — when I was honored with membership in this group, just less than a year ago, little did I realize at the time what a powerfully smart, knowledgeable and generous group I would be joining.  I’ve learned a ton from the @irregulars this past year, so much so that at times my aging brain goes into overload.  We’ve celebrated each other’s triumphs and tribulations, dissected each other’s thinking (and I do mean dissected),and plotted how to improve enterprise performance through best practices in all things tech.  But I’ve never been more proud of this group or honored by my membership in it than in how they rallied to support our colleague Vinnie Mirchandani when he learned recently how very fragile and precious is good health.

2.  Blog more often — I had such good intentions when I began my blog 11/8/2009, but life has truly gotten in the way quite a bit this year.  Since I can’t even consider retirement until I’ve said everthing I have to say about HRM, the HRM delivery system, HRM software and vendors, HRM outsourcing and providers, and many more professional topics of interest, I’ve just got to do a better job in 2011 of finding time and focus to blog.

3.  Travel less — business travel, no matter how productively you use your time on the road, is a giant time waster, good eating habit destroyer, and exercise routine disruptor.  After more than forty years on the road, I know the price paid by family and friends who don’t see you enough, community needs that you can’t meet, wardrobes that never get replenished except in crisis mode, and household responsibilities that get only barebones attention.  While I love seeing clients, vendors, conference attendees in situ, and speaking face-to-face with as many in our profession as possible, I think it’s time to open up the conference room Casa de Ranas for more such meetings and encourage everyone to consider Fort Myers, FL as a choice locale for their conference/meeting/etc.

4.  Go deeper and push harder in support of HRM SaaS InFullBloom — I’ll write more about the sea change now underway in HRM software, but what’s important about what’s happening is that, unless we educate everyone involved about the importance of great HRM SaaS (as opposed to old data/process design and architectural crap dressed up in new clothes, as happened all too often as we went from mainframe to client server HRM software), the opportunity of this moment will be lost.  HR professionals must drive business outcomes by distinguishing between pretty UIs and profoundly important technology enablement to better HRM decisions by managers and workers.  And HRM software professionals must know how and when to reinvent themselves and the software they create and support.

Wow, just writing up those four resolutions was exhausting, so imagine what actually accomplishing them is going to take!  Back to 2011 vacation planning, because I’m going to need them.

Friendship And Technology: Shout-out To Vinnie Mirchandani

Long before I had a blog of my own, way back in May, 2009, Vinnie Mirchandani, who runs Deal Architect and wrote The New Polymath along with his very active consulting/speaking practice, encouraged me to do a guest post on another of his blogs, New Florence, New Renaissance.   He was hosting a series of guest posts about how technology was influencing our hobbies, and I really struggled with my submission because I don’t have a lot of what most people think of as hobbies.  But I finally wrote about what mattered to me — friendship — and I was inspired to repost that guest post here after the incredible outpouring of friendship toward Vinnie over the last two days.  I have never been prouder of my fellow Enterprise Irregulars and the very irregular Dennis Howlett than when I watched them rally to support Vinnie and his family after Vinnie collapsed during a speaking engagement on Thursday morning.  As you can see by the linked posts on the Irregular’s Web site and Dennis’ blog hosted by ZDNet, Vinnie is going to be fine, but he does need some time to heal.  So, while Vinnie may not be able to blog much over the next few days, I thought I’d honor him and drive a little traffic to his blogs by reposting here what he encouraged me to write early last year.  This one’s for Vinnie!

—————————————————————————————————————————————

This continues a series of guest columns on how technology is reshaping hobbies and passions, basket weaving, rugby or whatever.  This time it is Naomi Bloom, managing partner at Bloom & Wallace. She has spent a lifetime and is a leading authority in the Human Resources field.  How appropriate her that her hobby is people, her friends. She describes how technology has made it easier to stay in touch with friends all over the world.

“Reading the many terrific entries in Vinnie’s series on technology and hobbies, I was awed that these oh-so-busy and accomplished professionals were able to commit the time and mindshare needed to pursue anything other than work.  This series made me stop and think about my own hobbies/passions and the fact that I spend my limited personal time in such diverse ways that nothing jumped out as a classic hobby or passion.  And then I thought about this some more when I was in Mexico last month (March, 2009) on my first totally unstructured vacation in many years.

I spent long, all afternoon, typically Mexican lunches with local friends whom I met more than thirty years ago when Cancun was very young (and so were we) and with whom I’ve been friends ever since.  Raul Vargas came to Cancun to start the first dental practice there, and I met him shortly thereafter when another friend took me to his office to have a glass shard removed from my foot.  We got caught up on children and (unbelievably) grandchildren, careers and travel plans, and remembered sunset sails while we wondered where the time had gone and then ordered more sipping tequila.  We were lucky to have had our “moments” before cell phone cameras, recorders and Twitter would have broadcast my cantina guitar playing and singing to the far corners of the globe.

Thinking of Vinnie’s guest series, I realized that my real hobby, my passion is friendship, and that my real talent is for beginning and sustaining friendships through every stage of my life and in my travels around the globe.  And all of these friends would say that I’ve never dropped the ball, even when we depended on annual snail mail holiday cards and the even less frequent phone calls that none of us could afford. But oh how advances in communications and collaboration technology, with its ubiquity and ever-reduced costs, have made my passion more pleasure than challenge.

So who are these far-flung friends?  Well, in addition to the Cancun contingent (young Raul in photo on right – yes, I was also young then) there’s Marco Cruz, the top alpinist in Ecuador with whom we traveled down the Humboldt Trail, walking around volcanoes and trading in native markets.  There’s Tom Feinle-Bisset, who guided us through the Flinders Range in Australia, getting me to eat camel (did you know that the Great Red Center is overrun with them?)  He also introduced us to the owner of Arkaroola (the outback station where Uranium was mined for the Manhattan Project), who graciously flew me over the property while my husband survived the Ridge Top Tour.  There’s Graham Barnes, the founder of a small HRM software company in the UK whom I met when his firm was the original licensee of my HRM Business Model “Starter Kit.” From childhood, there’s Mark Lediard, who’s spent his life improving public health systems in the far corners of the world and is now a life coach based in Jakarta.  Linda Nadelman Leeds, was my roommate during my first years out of UPenn, when I was doing my MBA nights, and we stayed in touch even as she, her husband and son (they left when he was four) did a fifteen year circumnavigation under sail.  And then there are the wonderful Aussies we met when one of our neighbors in Fairfax, VA leased his home through the Australian Embassy to their Air Force attaches, and my cousin Joel Russell, who’s the last of the Borscht Belt comics and always worked my family into his act.  You get the picture.

Keeping in touch with these wonderful people, sharing our lives so that the conversation begins without pause whenever we meet, has gone from painfully translated, hand-written letters that took a month to reach them to instant emails that I write in English and which are translated in both directions by Google translate.  I’ve gone from trying to remember who’s related to whom, not to mention birthdays and anniversaries, in our extended Bloom and Wallace families to having Geni keep track of everything.  I love the speed, intimacy, and sheer joy of sharing captioned photographic journals of our travels/visits/daily life on Smugmug with those who shared those experiences and others who might be interested, as well as knowing that our digital camera and separate hard drive cost so little to use and carry so little weight that we can just keep snapping and snapping.  Social networking has given me a way to reconnect and stay connected with childhood and University friends as well as early career colleagues with whom I would otherwise have lost touch.  My Palm sends me birthday and anniversary reminders, and there are e-Cards available in most of the languages I need to celebrate these occasions.  Next up, Ron’s testing Skype with Webcam for conferencing with his siblings and his 94-year-old Mom (we lost Grace 7/25/2010 at 95+) at her retirement home.  Once tested, we’ll hook up as many as possible friends and family. When the Palm Pre comes out (what a difference a year makes), I’ll make the move as soon as possible, in part to replace the broken camera on my Treo so that I can share photos instantly via Twitter and something like Flickr.

Age and health issues will slow all of us down eventually, and we won’t be able to rendezvous with scattered friends and family as often as we’d all like, but the advances in what I call interpersonal technology will keep us all connected, sharing thoughts, pictures, dreams etc. I can no longer imagine a world without instant translation of Hungarian emails or baby pictures sent from the hospital within moments of the event or being able to send our annual letter with links to photo albums to hundreds of friends and family and getting theirs in return with translation attached.  Does friendship qualify as a technology-enabled hobby/passion?  It does for me (and never more so than in how social tech allowed Vinnie’s friends to support him over the last couple of days).

My Cousin Joey, The Last Of The Borscht Belt Comics

On my stepmother’s side of the family (my stepmother was a first cousin of my birth mother, who died when I was 5+, so things were a little complicated), we were related to The Three Stooges, but I never got to spend time with them.  However, on the Bloom side of my family, we were not only related to but very much connected to my cousin Joey Russell, the last of the Borscht Belt comedians.  Never a top banana according to Variety, perhaps because he put family first and refused to be away from home for very long, Joey was always the top banana in my book.

Joey passed away at 90+ yesterday, 9/25/10, after a life filled with family, laughter and philanthropy.  He wasn’t just a funny man, he was a Jewish comedian, and they don’t come any funnier or more talented.  Of course, Joey Russell wasn’t his real name, but then who knows how we got Bloom when passing through Ellis Island.  When I was in high school, I visited the National Archives with my Dad, going through reels and reels of microfilm looking for the records of his mother’s, my Bubbi Bloom’s, arrival (and just wait until I blog her story!).  Not speaking any English, not understanding the procedures, the immigrants were confronted with less than patient bureaucrats who frequently assigned a name they could pronounce and spell regardless of what your given name had been.

Joey was larger than life, always keeping us laughing, using family in his schtick.  But he was also an amazing family man and philanthopist, throwing the weight of his oversized personality into everything he did.  I am so proud of him and wanted to share a little of his story with you in memorium.  I’d like to think that there’s a little of that comedic KSAOC in my own DNA, but that’s for others to decide.   What follows is from the New Haven Register, as written:

A Clown’s Life: Comedy legend Joey Russell celebrates 90 years of making them laugh

Published: Sunday, May 23, 2010 By Pamela McLoughlin, Register Staff

ORANGE — Did you hear the one about the entrepreneur, humanitarian and philanthropist whose synagogue is throwing him a huge 90th birthday party June 20?

Probably not, because he’s best known publicly as a professional stand-up comedian and as his one-time TV character, “Happy the Clown.”

Plus, he’s too clever to start a joke like that.

Milford resident Joey Russell, a nightclub comic who worked with comedy legends such as Alan King, Joey Bishop and Henny Youngman; had a run at the famed Copa Cabana and for years was a Borscht Belt funnyman, is being honored at Or Shalom.  Tickets are selling fast, his son, Carl, said, because his dad has touched countless lives.

“People love him,” Carl said.

There’s no debating whether the elder Russell is funny — even today, the jokes roll easily — but there’s also a side that couldn’t get more serious.

Russell established a local chapter of American Red Magen David for Israel (ARMDI), the Israeli equivalent of the American Red Cross, and raised money for some 20 ambulances.  He’s led more than 50 tours to the Holy Land, has sold hundreds of thousands worth of Israeli bonds and touched the lives of countless children and adults.  In 1996, Joey Russell was named Volunteer of the Year for ARMDI.

Fellow ARMDI volunteer, businessman and philanthropist Barry Vine called his close friend Joey Russell a “spark plug.”

“The thing that was most intriguing was his ability to reach young people,” Vine said, recalling how when talking to a group of youngsters one girl suggested collecting a penny for every Jew lost in the Holocaust.  Six million pennies was $60,000, the approximate cost of one ambulance, so Russell ran with the idea to create the Penny Parade Fund and the coins poured in — pennies, dimes, quarters, then paper bills and checks.

“He always puts himself out there. He always asks, ‘Can I help with this or that?”Vine said.

Vine said every year after the Jewish holidays, Russell would go to ShopRite and buy out all the kosher food at a discount, then deliver it to Jewish Family Services to be distributed among those struggling financially.

And Vine said even though his friend knows every joke ever told, he’s always listen to someone else tell a joke because “he enjoys the fact that you’re telling the joke.”

Or Shalom’s administrator, Jody Dietch, said although Russell didn’t know her son, Howie, he got the nervous young man through his bar mitzvah service by whispering jokes in his ear, including, “There’s another hundred dollars,” each time a new guest walked in.

“Joey has touched so many people from so many walks of life,” said Or Shalom’s spiritual leader, Rabbi Alvin Wainhaus.

The birthday brunch will be held at the synagogue, 205 Old Grassy Hill Road, from 10 a.m. to noon. For more information or reservations, call 203-799-2341.

Russell was one of 11 children born to an Orthodox Jewish family in Springfield, Mass. who left school early in order to help support his family.

His father, a rabbi, sold fruit and vegetables on the side.

When he was 15, Russell performed with his older brothers at a local club called the Emory Cafe.  His brothers played music and he sang songs and did humorous imitations of FDR and Alf Landon.

“A man called me over and said, ‘Come see me at my place, the Wonder Bar. You’ll work for me,’” Russell has said. “I worked there about five weeks, singing and doing lousy jokes. “

He married his wife, Josi, in 1944, and the two set out for Florida to find success on the resort circuit.  There were many performance opportunities Russell turned down through the years to stay close to home where he and Josi raised five children, all creative, educated and successful.  In his later years, Russell perfected an ethnic act, geared to older, Jewish audiences.  He did jokes, reflected on life and gave humorous lectures on Jewish superstitions and basic Yiddish.

Along the way, Russell met a professional clown, “Pop Lolly, the Lollipop King,” who would pass out candy to the kids.  Josi made her husband a clown suit, he learned to make balloon animals and made the rounds at movie theaters on Saturday afternoons.  Josi Russell is part owner of Costume Bazaar, which is currently for sale.

Before long, he became Happy the Clown, kids’ TV star on Channel 8.

Russell wore a white face, red nose, crumpled hat and red and white striped pants and one of his gimmicks that caught on were two wooden sticks he banged together and called, “happy sticks.”  Joey Russell has said the TV station paid him $250 a week and added, “I never knew this kind of money in my life.”

Russell also visited local hospitals and once raced to the Hospital of Saint Raphael in clown costume when Josi was in labor.

“I asked the sisters, ‘Could you possibly take the crucifix off the wall in my wife’s room?’  They said, ‘Happy, does it offend you?’  I said, ‘No, but it doesn’t seem right to have two Jews in the same room suffering so much,’” Russell remembers.

Carl Russell said people still come up to him and sing his father’s happy sticks song.

“His DNA is his clever, creative and funny,” Carl Russell said. “He’s touched lives in many dimensions.  He’s just been a charismatic, wonderful, philanthrapist to so many people in the Greater New Haven area.”

As for Russell’s TV career, he stayed on the air in New Haven for 88 weeks, then moved to Channel 30.  He changed his character’s name to Colonel Clown and remained on Connecticut TV until 1982.

Russell often recalls a famous encounter with former President Harry Truman.

It was in 1958, when Truman was a visiting lecturer at Yale University.  Russell had just finished a broadcast and saw Truman taking a stroll downtown with his bodyguards.  Russell rushed into the street with gifts for Truman’s new grandchild.

“Everything stops, a gun comes up like this, another guy with his gun is like this. I said, ‘I’m only from the TV studio!’”

Harry and Happy eventually exchanged greetings, and a photo of the pair ran in newspapers across the country.

In an interview with the Register a few years ago, Joey Russell said, “One of the great things in life is to save a soul.”

13th Annual HR Technology Conference 2010 Attendee Tips

As soon as I’ve finished delivering my Webinar entitled “Convergence in Bloom” today, I’ll be very focused on completing preparationsfor the 13th annual HR Technology Conference.  From the time we arrive in Chicago late morning on Monday (yes, The Wallace will be with me), until we leave late Friday, it will be non-stop vendor meetings, exhibition hall booth visiting (I make a valiant effort each year to stop at every single booth, but the show has gotten so large that this just isn’t possible), session attending, session delivery (I’m doing the Great Debate with Jim Holincheck Thursday morning and an “ask the expert” session Thursday afternoon), pickup conversations with valued colleagues and long-standing industry friends, the occasional meal, our annual Brazen Hussies gathering, and more.  Many of you know that I’m celebrating my 65th birthday this Friday, and I’ve chosen to think of the conference as my personal birthday party (it’s amazing what your mind can do when you let it drift).

As I’m making my own preparations, I thought you might enjoy a few tips from my personal list.  Like all good twitterstreams, this one should be read from the bottom up:

#HRTechConf tip #10: Get #HRTechConf11 on your calendar/in your budget now. 10/3-10/5/11 in Las Vegas. Yes, we’re going to VEGAS!

#HRTechConf tip #9: Talk, talk, talk and listen, listen, listen because sharing questions, ideas and experiences with colleagues is the point.

#HRTechConf tip #8: Bring a swag carrier if you’re flying in or plan to carry your #Monster home in your lap.

#HRTechConf tip #7: Leave room in your schedule for serendipity and for nature breaks.

#HRTechConf tip #6: Attend as many sessions as possible. I do because they’re excellent, and there’s NO sales crap allowed.

#HRTechConf tip #5: Don’t try to attend > 3 vendor parties Wed night. Save yourself for Great Debate Thurs AM.

#HRTechConf tip #4: Go online now http://www.hrtechnologyconference.com/agenda.html and plan your conference.

#HRTechConf tip #3: Carry a water bottle and refill it every chance you get. Convention center climates are designed to dessicate.

#HRTechConf tip #2: Wear your most comfortable walking shoes. Few places to sit except in sessions and long convention center distances.

#HRTechConf tip #1: For vendors of greatest interest, do you homework in advance so booth time is hands-on demo time.

I’ll look forward to seeing you in Chicago.

Naomi’s Questions For Oracle OpenWorld 2010

File:CNO Cycle.svg

Nuclear Fusion, Oracle Fusion, Close Enough?

With Oracle OpenWorld 2010 coming up next week, I hate having to miss one of the major enterprise IT three, four, five-ring circuses of the year.  I would have loved to attend, but HR Tech 2010 is thefollowing week.  And unlike my much valued and much younger Oracle AR handler, Kris Barondess, I’m no longer able to handle two weeks of back-to-back firehose learning, swag-gathering, mile-long convention center halways, dawn to dusk vendor/colleague meetings plus official sessions, not to mention the late night action in whatever bar is still serving.

Lots of the EIs will be at #oow10 (for you Twitter virgins, that’s the hashtag for OpenWorld 2010) there, tweeting/blogging/ferreting about like mad.  I plan to attend vicariously through their coverage and that of many other analyst colleagues as well as by following as much of the livestreaming and twitterstream as possible.

To help all of them get ready for the action, and to ensure that my questions don’t get lost in the shuffle, I wanted to enlist not only the official analysts/press/influencer/kibbitzer contingent but all those PeopleSoft HCM and EBS HCM customers and prospects in my search for answers.    And since I’ve got more questions than even I can remember, I thought I’d better start capturing them in one giant OpenWorld prep post.   As further preparation, you should read the relevant and quite lengthy, not to mention lively, discussion in the HR Technology group (membership required) at LinkedIn.

As in all Bloom & Wallace contests, the first person (or this could be a small team from one organiation because one bottle of good sipping tequila goes a long way) who provides credible answers to all of my questions — even if I hate the answers — will get a bottle of Souza Tres Generaciones served by me personally at Casa de Ranas.  So let’s start with the easy questions:

  1. With respect to the product roadmap for PeopleSoft (PSFT) HCM, what comes after 9.1 and 9.2?  What are the plans for PSFT 10.0 and beyond?
  2. What are the long-term, rearchitecting, rejuvenating, massive overhauling next generation plans for PSFT?  Or is that plan named Fusion HCM?
  3. Beyond customer releases (and reading Bill Kutik’s entire column on this is a must), introducing ever more bits of Fusion middleware, and making changes that make it ever easier to connect (or will it be truly integrated?) Fusion HCM capabilities with PSFT HCM, is there a real future for PSFT HCM or does Oracle’s Applications Unlimited really mean that PSFT HCM is an evolutionary dead-end (as I’ve been saying from the get go) but one which, for 22% annual maintenance, will continue to get modest customer releases?
  4. With respect to the product roadmap for EBS HCM, what comes after 12.1 and 12.2?  What are the plans for EBS 13.0?
  5. What are the long-term, rearchitecting, rejuvenating, massive overhauling next generation plans for EBS?  Or is that plan named Fusion HCM?
  6. Beyond customer releases, introducing quite large bits of Fusion middleware (since with EBS, it only runs on Oracle DBMS etc. so can consume a lot more of Fusion middleware), and making changes that make it ever easier to connect (or will it be truly integrated?) Fusion HCM capabilities with EBS HCM, is there a real future for EBS HCM or does Oracle’s Applications Unlimited really mean that EBS HCM is an evolutionary dead-end (as I’ve also been saying from the get go) but one which, for 22% annual maintenance, will continue to get modest customer releases?

Now for some additional questions about the future of PSFT and EBS HCM:

  1. Why would Oracle be advising their current PSFT and EBS HCM installed base, and advising them strongly, to get to their current releases as quickly as possible rather than advising them to get ready for a migration to Fusion HCM?  This is the confirmed position of Oracle on this point, and the rationale for doing an upgrade at this time may be compelling — improved functionality, improved user experience, better underpinnings via taking advantage of more Fusion middleware (except where, for PSFT HCM customers, that would conflict with their choosing not to use Oracle DMBS etc. under the covers), better operational performance, and better preparation to consume (don’t you love that word?) Fusion HCM.  But it’s interesting that no one seems to be talking about better preparation for migrating to (there’s NEVER a mention of the shunned term implementing) Fusion HCM.
  2. And what about all those, perhaps most, PSFT and EBS HCM customers who are on older releases, with tons of added on modules from other sources, miles of PeopleCode and FlexFields, and a truly spaghetti-like pile of HR technology?  I believe the party line is for these folks to unleash as much as possible in EBS and PSFT HCM, use the opportunity of an upgrade to current releases to unwind the spaghetti, rationalize those Flexfields while eliminating as much PeopleCode as possible, and cast off those other vendor add-ons where they overlap with Oracle-provided PSFT or EBS HCM functionality?
  3. Where all modern HCM software is presumed to be self service and there’s no separate payment (license or subscription) of same from the relevant vendors, what plans (if any) Oracle have to eliminate separate pricing for the self service capabilities of EBS and PSFT HCM?
  4. For those PSFT or EBS HCM customers on older releases who just want regulatory updates, will Oracle offer a much lower annual maintenance fee for some like “regulatory sustainance?”  Whether these customer are destined eventually for an implementation of Fusion HCM or going in a different direction over the longer term, what’s the probability that Oracle will offer tiered maintenance fees to those customers who simply choose to stay where they are and not upgrade?  That’s right, I want someone (obviously not me!) to get up and ask Mr. Ellison if he plans to offer his valued customers tiered maintenance fees that are commensurate with the value received.

Now for some questions that are strictly about Fusion HCM (but may well apply to other parts of the Fusion applications portfolio):

  1. When will there be a complete Fusion HCM replacement applications suite — so global core HRMS including payroll, benefits, talent management built on a common architecture, object model, and entirely integrated with a fully social and mobile user experience —  to which current PeopleSoft HCM or EBS HCM customers may migrate?
  2. If that complete Fusion HCM replacement applications suite isn’t going to be GA in Q4/2010, what will be on offer in terms of functional scope, maturity of underpinnings, readiness for market?
  3. If you’re a card-carrying, full maintenance-paying licensee of PeopleSoft HCM or EBS HCM, will you be given Fusion HCM, absolutely free as a licensed application for on-premise implementation?  I’ve heard that you’ll get like for like, but I worry about what that really means given how differently and in what separate modules older software was licensed.  I’d hate to see PSFT or EBS HCM customers, long-standing customers, not get their complete replacement Fusion HCM suite as recompense for all those maintenance dollars they’ve paid Oracle by Oracle partitioning Fusion HCM quite differently (as you would expect for a new, truly integrated, only self service, totally social modern HCM) so that it rarely qualifies for that like for like replacement.
  4. When will there be a complete Fusion HCM applications suite — so global core HRMS including payroll, benefits, talent management built on a common architecture, object model, and entirely integrated with a fully social and mobile user experience — which can be “sold” outright to new customers (i.e. those who are not current PeopleSoft or EBS HCM customers)?
  5. Whether for new customers or migrating legacy customers, on what business model/deployment/architectural basis will Fusion HCM present itself?  Will Fusion HCM be available as (1) multi-tenant SaaS, (2) single-tenant on demand, (3) single-tenant customer maintained on premise and/or (4) single-tenant appliance delivered on premise?  Will it be offered as true SaaS, as SaaS InFullBloom or will it merely be hosted, single tenant, for those customers who want hosting?
  6. If Fusion HCM isn’t true SaaS, run multi-tenant by Oracle, and only true SaaS, then how much of the benefit of true SaaS will be lost through their having to support other business/deployment and architectural models?  Can this new product line survive/prosper if Oracle chooses to offer it on a mix it and match it basis?
  7. Whether subscribed (or even if licensed), will it be subscribed such that new capabilities don’t add to the cost or will it be subscribed by mini-modules so that there’s always more subscription needed to get to the full suite?  I’d love to see Fusion HCM appear as a true SaaS application, taking the position that Workday’s taking  where once you’ve subscribed to HCM, you get all the new functionality at no extra cost for the length of your subscription contract.  How wonderful that would be for those PSFT and EBS HCM customers, perhaps running on old, no longer supported or even fairly recent but not adequate releases if they could get their new apps essentially free and just pay that portion of the subscription which covers the hosting and support charges?
  8. Whatever Release 1 of Fusion HCM consists, what will be the roadmap for the next 3-4 releases?  What functionality will be available immediately, for what geographies, with what depth and breadth of capability?  What type of business could run completely on Release 1?
  9. If not a full replacement suite, does Release 1 of Fusion HCM consist of add-ons that may be useful to current PSFT or EBS HCM customers, either to replace specific PSFT or EBS modules or to displace add-ons purchase outside of Oracle?
  10. What will be the scope of those add-ons and how many releases/collections of add-ons will it take to get to a full replacement HCM suite?
  11. Will Fusion HCM, whatever its initial scope, once subscribed (or licensed?), deliver new functionality three or four times a year?  Will the functionability be at no additional cost regardless of expansion?

And now for the toughies:

  1. Since Fusion HCM is presumably built on a modern HRM object model, which should differ tremendously from the core data design of PeopleSoft, which dates back to the late-’80s, how are PeopleSoft customers are going to connect their Enterprise HCM platform directly to Fusion HCM?  How (by what magic?) will Fusion and PeopleSoft HCM  interoperate/integrate in real-time, in a fully automated manner with that automation provided by Oracle as to data structures, including historical data structures, processes that cross platforms, business rules that live in PeopleCode but are needed in Fusion, etc.?  I admit to being sceptical about the ease not only of interoperation/integration but also of migration from PSFT to Fusion HCM.  And I suspect that the now known (at least by Oracle) difficulty of any such interoperation/integration/migration has been factored carefully into when and how they will urge their PSFT HCM customers to do more than “consume” specific Fusion HCM components.
  2. When looked at objectively, Oracle’s EBS HCM has a more modern object model under the covers than does PeopleSoft.  Since anything Fusion HCM must have an object model, Oracle has said previously  (but I haven’t heard this recently) that Fusion HCM’s object model would be based on EBS HCM’s.  If that’s true, and considering that EBS HCM has been unleashing Fusion middleware to a significant extent, I can well understand the possibility of treating Fusion HCM snippets/modules/whatever as tightly (by Oracle) interated add-ons to EBS HCM (although this product is pretty rich already in strategic HRM functionality).  Nonetheless, I would like to know about the ease not only of interoperation/integration but, therefore, of migration from EBS to Fusion HCM.   And I suspect that the now known (at least by Oracle) difficulyt of any such interoperation/integration/migration, although expected to be much less so than with PSFT HCM, has been factored carefully into when and how they will urge their EBS HCM customers to do more than “consume” specific Fusion HCM components.
  3. PeopleSoft never imposed any discipline on its customers around position versus job, and neither did most of the implementation consultants working with those customers.  Since you can’t do robust talent management without that clear distinction, just as one example of incompatible object models, how on earth would a robust Fusion talent app be integrated with PeopleSoft implementations that don’t use position at all?  No doubt this will all become clear in time, but it may well be ill-advised to invest heavily in a long-standing PeopleSoft implementation — let alone to do a new one — until you’ve got most to all of these questions answered about Fusion HCM apps.
  4. With the great, very large, and long-standing team devoted to Fusion HCM apps, I’m expecting a really wonderful, next gen suite that’s a full replacement for EBS HCM and, much more urgently in my opinion, for PeopleSoft HCM.  I’m expecting robust system of record functionality tightly integrated with equally robust talent management functionality, not to mention full global payroll and benefits administration.  I’m expecting everything social/collaborative, lots of embedded intelligence, actionable and predictive analytics, interrogatory configuration — the gantseh megilleh.  While not all functionality for all geographies can be expected in R1, with 3-4 releases every year, as most true SaaS vendors are providing, it shouldn’t take very long for Fusion HCM to mature into that truly next gen replacement suite.  That’s what I’m expecting, or really that’s what the market deserves after this long wait and zillions of paid maintenance dollars.  Is that what’s happening?  If that’s not what the market gets — R1 Fusion HCM Apps late 2010 with full replacement suite available by mid to late-2012 — what will we be getting and with what customer reaction?
  5. Oracle faces the innovator’s dilemma with Fusion HCM apps, but that’s no surprise.  If Oracle’s Fusion HCM team have indeed done a green field object model, using the best ideas from EBS and PSFT, I have no doubt that the very capable team working on this will have come up with the right HCM object model for the new decade.   But doing that, as noted above, would create serious challenges in creating a seamless and durable integration with either EBS or PSFT, something with which we are all familiar from having had to interface, let alone integrate, totally disparate HCM products in the past.  No wonders of Web services, no XML schemas, no magic manipulations can create stable, durable integrations across disparate object models in our world of historical, current and prospective data management “out of the box.”  And that’s before we take into consideration the extent of customizations — yes, code-based customizations — that were done to so many PSFT HCM implementations and the extent to which EBS HCM implementations have been built out using Oracle’s equivalent tools, e.g. FlexFields.  So I’m VERY interested in how far Fusion has gone toward that industry-standard, modern object model?
  6. From an object model perspective, either Oracle has minimized the leap of their Fusion HCM object model in the interests of ease of integration between new Fusion HCM apps and EBS HCM/PSFT HCM or they have optimized the new Fusion HCM object model with a keen understanding of the integration challenges they face.  But let’s remember that Oracle owns both EBS and PSFT and can do with those products as they like, to include making such changes, subject of course to customer impact/preferences, as may be needed to simplify and/or stabilize the relationships between the EBS and PSFT HCM object models/data designs and those of Fusion HCM.  There are definitely ways in which Oracle’s Fusion HCM apps could mitigate the challenges to EBS and PSFT customers and still make that object model leap (and we know they’re making some really important architectural leaps).  And there are also some ways that Oracle could mitigate the cost/learning curve/etc. for those customers who haven’t made a full-scale commitment to Fusion Middleware — a middleware collection that my experts in same declare to be quite good.  It would be great to get a copy of the Fusion HCM object model ASAP so that we could do a detailed assessment of the extent of discontinuities, similarities, modernizations, compromises, etc.
  7. Mitigating both of these next gen challenges could be done with one or two approaches which the cognoscenti — that would not be me — have been hinting/discussing for some time.  First, Oracle could subscribe/host (dare I say offer SaaS?) Fusion HCM apps, to include the whole middleware stack and — and this is where it gets interesting — the needed two-way integrations with EBS or PSFT HCM, keeping those integrations up-to-date continuously, and in both directions.  Each customer would still have to go through some flavor of implementation to use the new Fusion HCM apps, and that implementation would have to include a very careful review of how they have used the current object models and physical data designs of EBS or PSFT HCM in order to eliminate any usages that complicate taking advantage of those supported integrations.  Furthermore, Oracle might need to limit/constraint the use of some EBS or PSFT HCM or Fusion HCM features in order to enable a more robust and stable set of two-way integrations, but customers may well be willing to do that in order to keep the familiar while taking advantage of the new.  A second approach would be for Oracle to host (or partner for this purpose) everything for their customers, which would allow them to take advantage of an entire Fusion hardware/middleware/applications/everything stack to handle all the complexities and costs out of sight of their customers.  Customers would still go through some form of implementation as they brought their EBS or PSFT HCM suites into conformance with whatever constraints Oracle needed to impose on them in order to make all the pieces work together at a still affordable hosting cost, but it’s an intriguing idea on the surface.  On this topic, I’m reminded of Joel Summer’s email to then Chuck Phillips dated 6/9/2003 with talking points for Oracle’s planned migration of PeopleSoft HCM customers to Oracle’s EBS.  This is just one of a treasure trove of documents released as part of the relevant discovery process when PeopleSoft tried to prevent Oracle’s hostile takeover of PeopleSoft. http://www.justice.gov/atr/cases/f204300/204369.htm  Our industry lost a genuine thought leader, talented executive and very menschy guy when Joel retired.  But if you’re thinking that the path to Fusion HCM is going to be an easy one for either EBS or PSFT HCM customers, Joel’s email is required reading.

But what would I most like to know?  Assuming that Fusion HCM will be highly competitive with the best of today’s HCM software, I’d love to run some of my “killer” scenarios through it, check it out against my preferred architectural behaviors, compare its object model to mine (at the highest levels) and put it to the same “tests” that I do the products of all the major HCM software vendors.  So I guess my biggest question is when will they let me get my hands on Fusion HCM?

Choices, Compromises, Serendipity and Sh#t

The Compass Rose Of Life

The Compass Rose Of Life

Life doesn’t just happen.  Well actually it does, but there are a zillion opportunities for you to chart and then steer your own path through it by how you react to the opportunities and challenges that life offers.  The choices you make (shall I marry Ron Wallace or one of the other fine contenders?), the compromises you’re willing and able to sustain (if I marry Ron Wallace, we’re not going to be rich but I’ll be a lot happier than with the Prince behind door #2, besides which I’m quite capable of earning a good living), the serendipity to which many of us are subject if we’ll only seize the moment (how lucky I was to have been born into a family/religion/cultural community that valued education and rewarded academic accomplishment or here I am at the University of Pennsylvania, a really top school, even if I’m working my way through and unable to participate as fully in campus life as some of my more affluent classmates), and the shit that happens (what do you mean I’ve got arthritis and fibromyalgia when I’m clearly in my prime? what do you mean my husband has cancer and I need both shoulders repaired?).  Choices, compromises, serendipity and shit — these are indeed the four winds blowing every life around.

In real life, some people, just by the accident of their birth, really do get more shit than anyone deserves and are given very limited choices.  But for those of us born into reasonable circumstances and with a reasonable amount of intelligence (or at least the potential for acquiring same) and good health, therefore  for most readers of this blog, what we accomplish in life has a lot to do with:

  1. the choices we make from the smorgasbord of possibilities that our lives present,
  2. the compromises, really sacrifices, we’re willing and able to make in support of those choices,
  3. the effectiveness of our responses to the serendipitous opportunities that our lives present, and
  4. our ability to handle the inevitable shit, and I don’t simply mean here the fall-out from our bad choices, poor compromises or ineffective seizing of the opportunities but rather the really bad stuff that’s not in any way our fault.

Are you wondering what got me started on this topic which may seem very far afield from my usual posts?  The simple answer is aging.  As the years in front are increasingly outnumbered by the years behind, it’s a wise person who takes stock of what they’d like to do/see/experience/learn/etc. during those years in front and how and with whom they would like to spend their precious time.  A more culturally-specific answer is that these are the Days of Awe, between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the period in the Jewish yearly cycle when we are commanded to take stock and to rededicate our lives to higher purpose.  We are also commanded, during this period, to resolve outstanding earthly issues before we seek atonement during Yom Kippur for our spiritual ones.

But the very Naomi-specific answer is that I’m a methodical, list-making, over-analyzing, searcher after mental models and taxonomies.  I’ve approached every important part of my life with as much careful research and preparation as I could muster at the time, working hard to understand my real choices (often more than I realized at first glance), just what was lurking under the surface of various compromises that would come back to haunt me later, how truly serendipitous an opportunity might be versus arriving as a result of long-standing effort and deliberate seed-planting, and (after the usual railing at the G-ds when misfortunate strikes) accepting/working with/overcoming life’s shit with the best grace I could muster.  And now, with the convergence of my 65th birthday, the Days of Awe, and such a dismal set of global and American challenges, it seems like as good a time as ever to do a little extra reflection, analysis, list-making and rededication.

Is there any possible connection between all of this and what’s happening — or should happen — in my professional neighborhood, at the corner of HRM and IT?  Absolutely!  The compass rose of life can be applied to every aspect of life, from developing HRM strategies to selecting and implementing HR technology to deciding who to hire.  Charting a course that selects the best possible path through each of these situations requires making the best possible choices, accepting and then making work appropriate compromises, seizing the opportunities that present themselves, and dealing with the inevitable shit.  Charting that course takes considerable knowledge (yes, that’s where the heavy lifting begins), ongoing discipline (more heavy lifting), real insight into deciding what’s important and why (oops, sounds like deep fact-finding, analysis and introspection), a willingness to take action and then commit yourself, when the inevitable shit hits the fan, to doing the right thing and making your choices and compromises (assuming they were sufficiently wise) succeed.  A heavy load indeed, for one’s professional and personal life, but there’s really no other good option.  Steer your own course wisely or be at the mercy of those who would steer it for you.

Remembering 9/11: Let’s Give ’em Hell!

What follows is an email I wrote to friends and family on 9/13/2001 after arriving home safely in what can only be described as the great HR Tech Conference evacuation of 2001.  It was a very scary time, and what I wrote captures both my fears and my anger.   If I’d had a blog then, I would have written this as a post.

“I arrived home in Fort Myers last evening after driving for two days in a commandeered Dulles Washington Flyer taxi from Baltimore, where I had been speaking at the HR Tech Conference.  We avoided all metro areas just to be on the safe side.  Emily Eason, a dear friend whom some of you know, and I decided that staying in Baltimore wasn’t where we wanted to be (she’s from Seattle), so we called upon Ozzie, the driver we used when we both lived in the Washington area.  While our usual driver was in Turkey to see his sick Mom, the colleague answering his calls had heard of us and, after confirming with Ozzie that “our check was good,” he agreed to drive us to Fort Myers — and to take our check.  We’ve been checking on friends and family too, and so far, so good.

I know you all remember the start of the Yom Kippur war.  I remember it vividly.  Sitting in Kodimoh (my family’s orthodox schul), in the women’s section (can you imagine me being told to go sit in the women’s section?), deep in prayer, when the sabbath goy (the schul’s handyman) ran in and right up to the rabbi waving a note.  We all continued the traditional chanting, thinking that the interruption was some housekeeping matter.  And then the rabbi stopped the service to tell all of us that Israel’s enemies had chosen that day of all days to attack the Jewish state.  First there was absolute shock and silence, then the murmurs began, and then I remember (but perhaps I only imagine it in my memory) that the sound of singing broke out, spontaneously, as we raised our voices in the Israeli national anthem.  When the congregation took their seats again, our Rabbi Weisfogel challenged us to do whatever we could to demonstrate our solidarity with Israel and to show our commitment to the failure of our enemies by succeeding.  Success not just in war but in living.  Again, it may be more in my memory than it was in reality, but I came away from that day really believing that in our individual and collective success lies the failure of our enemies.  Where did you think they got the expression “living well is the best revenge”?

All of that came back to me Tuesday morning when, at the HR Tech conference in Baltimore, I was sitting on an industry analyst panel which Bill Kutik moderated, when a man walked in and up to Bill with a note.  Bill stepped out for a moment while we continued the panel discussion, thinking it was some housekeeping matter.  We finished the panel and then he announced, with utter disbelief, that the enemies of the US — the enemies of every civilized human being — had attacked the World Trade Center.  We all know now just how extensive was that attack, and how well-planned.  And I wish now that I had stood up and broken into our national anthem, but I was too shaken.

After two days of silent driving, it’s time to speak.  If a small country like Israel has survived, surrounded by so many enemies, and Israelis have learned to live fully and richly in spite of the best efforts of terrorists to steal their freedom and their joy, can we do less?  I for one intend to show these bastards that they’ve messed with the wrong woman.  I’m back at work this morning, and I’m going on with a long-planned vacation to Italy at the end of September.  With every successful business venture, with every successful volunteer effort, with every step forward, personally and professionally, that we take individually and collectively, we demonstrate our solidarity with our countrymen and our commitment to the failure of our enemies. ”

Let’s give them hell.  Naomi

Naomi’s Annual “Appearance” On Mr. Bill’s Radio Show

Oh No Mr. Bill!

On Wednesday (9-1-2010) at noon EST, I’ll be doing my third annual guest “appearance” on Bill Kutik’s Radio Show, which is very generously sponsored by Knowledge Infusion.  I always look forward to doing these shows because Bill’s a great interviewer, the long tale of replays is enormous, and getting ready to be pithy and ready for Bill’s questions forces me to a clarity of thinking that ups my game.

No one is ever sure what we’ll discuss, including Bill and me, but I’m sure we’ll hit on some of the most important topics facing our industry.  What about the absolute sea change that’s underway in HRM software (really in all applications software) from single tenant, licensed on-premise to multi-tenant, subscribed and hosted software?  Which vendors will be the winners, and who will end up in one of the growing software graveyards?  And what about the HR profession?  After so many years of our collective best efforts, why are they still unable to draw a line of sight from what they do to the financial outcomes of the organization?  Is there a point at which the line of business leaders just take over strategic HRM?  We love naming names, but you’ll never know who they are if you don’t listen.

I’m sure that we’ll take a few moments to kvell over the upcoming HR Technology Conference, which substitutes in Bill’s life for the physical children he never had (or at least doesn’t acknowledge).  If you can’t wait for the conference, join the conversation at the Conference’s LinkedIn group.  Or better yet, read everything on this blog and then quote my own mistakes to me at the Conference’s “Ask the Expert” session I’ll be hosting — but please don’t bring throwable fruit.

But whatever else you’re up to over the next few days, please do join Bill and me for what feels to us like one of the many thousand such telephone chats we’ve done since we met.  The only difference will be that you are there.

Event Report — Workday Technology Summit 8-23-2010 — Humongous Post

Workday held a briefing yesterday for twenty of enterprise software’s toughest and most knowledgeable analysts.  Workday had much more to say about their technology and business strategy, about their underlying architecture and object model, and about what’s cooking in the Lab than they’ve revealed thus far to this type of audience.  Even a few surprises for me, and I’ve been following them closely.  Much of this session was tweeted, so nothing here is under NDA.

For those of you familiar with/working with my HRM object model and architecture “starter kits” (please note that Workday is not a licensee but has been a client as was PeopleSoft), and those of you who have been reading my blog (including all the boring bits), there are no surprises here as to direction.  But I think you’ll be impressed, as many to most of the analysts were, with how far they’ve gotten along their chosen path — and with what discipline, healthy culture and management effectiveness they’ve accomplished this.  Obviously, having a lot of resources with which to work and a headstart from some acquired technology helps, and it also helps that the leadership has learned from their past efforts.

I couldn’t make this important session to my regret, but I’ve tried to capture as much as possible of the twitterstream via RTs.  Below is my twitterstream from this period, read as you know from the bottom up to get chron order.  Following that are two sources (thus far) of the total twitterstream as captured by colleagues who were there using tools with which I’m not familiar.  And I’m sure there will be a deluge of blog posts/analyst reports/etc. coming very soon.  Already posted are Dennis Howlett, Brian Sommer, Mipro.  A good backgrounder on Workday’s technology stack, written before the Summit is here.

What’s important here is how much leverage Workday derives from working in objects as true objects and from the other components of their architecture.  And while I’m not touting Workday per se, I think they are an excellent example of the ideas I have been touting for quite some time.  You’ll reach your own conclusions about what’s needed to compete at the intersection of HRM and IT, but I thought this humongous twitterstream might be useful input.
