Adventures of Bloom & Wallace

a work in progress

Event Report — Workday Technology Summit 8-23-2010 — Humongous Post

Workday held a briefing yesterday for twenty of enterprise software’s toughest and most knowledgeable analysts.  Workday had much more to say about their technology and business strategy, about their underlying architecture and object model, and about what’s cooking in the Lab than they’ve revealed thus far to this type of audience.  Even a few surprises for me, and I’ve been following them closely.  Much of this session was tweeted, so nothing here is under NDA.

For those of you familiar with/working with my HRM object model and architecture “starter kits” (please note that Workday is not a licensee but has been a client as was PeopleSoft), and those of you who have been reading my blog (including all the boring bits), there are no surprises here as to direction.  But I think you’ll be impressed, as many to most of the analysts were, with how far they’ve gotten along their chosen path — and with what discipline, healthy culture and management effectiveness they’ve accomplished this.  Obviously, having a lot of resources with which to work and a headstart from some acquired technology helps, and it also helps that the leadership has learned from their past efforts.

I couldn’t make this important session to my regret, but I’ve tried to capture as much as possible of the twitterstream via RTs.  Below is my twitterstream from this period, read as you know from the bottom up to get chron order.  Following that are two sources (thus far) of the total twitterstream as captured by colleagues who were there using tools with which I’m not familiar.  And I’m sure there will be a deluge of blog posts/analyst reports/etc. coming very soon.  Already posted are Dennis Howlett, Brian Sommer, Mipro.  A good backgrounder on Workday’s technology stack, written before the Summit is here.

What’s important here is how much leverage Workday derives from working in objects as true objects and from the other components of their architecture.  And while I’m not touting Workday per se, I think they are an excellent example of the ideas I have been touting for quite some time.  You’ll reach your own conclusions about what’s needed to compete at the intersection of HRM and IT, but I thought this humongous twitterstream might be useful input.
